Southampton University researchers from the UK analysed data from nine previous studies encompassing information from more than 430,000 people.
They found that drinking two additional cups of coffee a day was linked to a 44 per cent lower risk of developing liver cirrhosis, a disease associated with a long-term lifestyle of heavy drinking that kills more than one million people every year worldwide.
Cirrhosis, a disease of the liver, causes damage and impairs it from filtering out toxins from the blood. The disease is caused by the thickening of normal tissues. Alcohol is the main cause of cirrhosis in adults.
Each year cirrhosis kills over one million people worldwide. It can be caused by hepatitis infections, excessive alcohol consumption, immune disorders and fatty liver disease, which is tied to obesity and diabetes.
Coffee contains compounds that offer antioxidant effects and anti-inflammatory properties. But the beverage alone cannot reverse the lifestyle choices that result in cirrhosis.
The Study Finds Connection between Liver health and Coffee
A team of scientists studied the effects of coffee in nearly 2,000 people, who were suffering from liver cirrhosis. First they divided the patients into groups and then started the research. Here are the results:
-One cup of coffee decreases the risk of cirrhosis by 22%
-Two cups of coffee lowers the risk by 43%
-Three cups of coffee every day provide a 57% lower risk of cirrhosis
-And finally, by drinking 4 cups of coffee every day can decrease the risk of cirrhosis by 65%
