RLS, “Restless Leg Syndrome”, has such a simple cause that is totally overlooked by medical doctors in their single-minded desire to sell drugs.
When Internet marketers get involved, trying to sell some unique formula that they can charge a premium price for, then the simplicity gets further lost to the relief-craving public.
So, let’s keep this simple, shall we?
Naturopathic Doctors and veterinarians study the scientifically-proven nutritional needs of the ultimate customers they serve, unlike medical doctors who get a very cursory overview of our dietary needs. MDs are mostly taught how to prescribe drugs to manage the symptoms of the diseases and conditions they attempt to treat. They consider diet of little importance.
A clue that you have chosen the wrong doctor for the job comes when your Medical Doctor admits that RLS is an “idiopathic syndrome”. Translation: “We don’t know what causes that.”
How can they be “experts” if they don’t even know what causes the condition?
How can they determine the most effective treatment, if they don’t know what causes RLS? They may think that it is caused by the body deciding to attack itself, but that is only a theory.
There are other equally plausible explanations, such as that our diet is very mineral-deficient. This fact is not considered by most Medical Doctors, who are taught to prescribe synthetic drugs, not the inexpensive nutrients our body actually needs.

There is some dissension over which minerals are needed to control RLS, but I will trust the advice of the smartest, most broadly experienced physician I know, Joel Wallach DVM, ND — who is both a Veterinarian and a Naturopathic Doctor. (You may wonder what advantage for human health does a veterinarian bring. The advantage is that large animal vets are paid for their knowledge of how to prevent disease in farm animals and expensive zoo specimens, so they are trained to find the most cost-effective methods to support the animals’ health. Medical doctors are schooled in the most profitable methods of treating disease symptoms, once we are in pain or distress.)
I met Dr. Wallach at one of his lectures a few years ago. The next morning he invited me to breakfast and told me what to do about my 40-year-long problem of acute back pain and sciatica. I followed his directions and they ended my back pain permanently. No surgery needed. Simply amazing! He has a long and successful track record in the field of human and animal health, reversing many conditions for which medical doctors have no cures.
Dr. Wallach says that RLS is essentially a calcium/magnesium deficiency. He recommends that we all take the 90 essential nutrients for all our body’s needs daily, but — in this case — I’ve seen that people can get by with a good quality calcium citrate/magnesium citrate formula that can be purchased on Amazon or in any vitamin shop. The citrate form of the minerals is the most bioavailable way to provide our body what it needs, in the judgement of Wallach and other true experts I’ve surveyed. Cheaper oxide or carbonate forms of these minerals are less effective.
Some people have found effective RLS relief with the herb kratom, which can best be purchased online. We don’t know exactly how kratom works to quell RLS, though it may be due to the high mineral content in the virgin jungles where it is grown. Some people swear by kratom for their restless legs, saying that minerals didn’t work for them. Perhaps they didn’t take enough — or the right form of the minerals.
In any case, people seem to be receiving relief from a good (not cheap drugstore brand) calcium/magnesium supplements and/or the herb kratom. I take both, as both have many benefits when taken correctly.
Robin: “I’ve been taking magnesium/calcium citrate for about six days now, per your suggestion, and my RLS has all but disappeared.”
A few days later, I got back to Robin and this is what she said: “It is working wonderfully. I can’t believe the difference in the RLS. It no longer keeps me up at night.”
We know that muscle cramps are a symptom of calcium and magnesium deficiencies, so it is not surprising that RLS is also helped by them. The two minerals are complementary to each other and should be dosed in a 2:1 calcium to magnesium ratio. Eighty percent or more of the U.S. population is said to be significantly deficient in both, so there is little worry of taking too much. (Magnesium is also a very effective mineral to ward off constipation. If you take too much magnesium, it will cause loose stools. If this occurs, take a little less until the problem is corrected.)

The truth is, there are 60 minerals that our body must have every day. Taking one or two — without the other 59 or 58 — may not do us much good — because minerals can only do their work if their co-factors are also present. So, unless you happen to also consume the other required minerals to perform that specific reaction, your body must either rob Calcium from your bones or go without — causing your mental and physical performance to suffer (for example, RLS.) Robbing calcium or magnesium from your bones causes other long term problems, which are often incorrectly blamed on aging.
We have the capability to live to 120 years or more. Due to our modern eating habits, we break down much sooner than our genetic programming dictates. The reason for this is simple mineral and other nutrient deficiencies in our over-processed, nutrient-depleted diet, which for many is largely composed of fast foods, snack foods, and sugar-filled carbonated beverages.
Our health insurance policies and Medicare/Medicaid don’t cover the expense of the supplements we need to bring us up to functioning 100%. The drugs doctors prescribe — which are covered by insurance — contain little or none of the simple nutrients that our body demands. This is an unfortunate reality, made worse by the fact that we are now forced for purchase so-called “health insurance”, whether we want it or not.
It is unfortunate that our government allows insurance to provide us synthetic drugs, rather than the nutrients we lack, but that is a problem beyond the scope of this brief article.
I would rather pay for the nutrients that science has found I need to be healthy, rather than paying the same amount for insurance that I hope I’ll never need. It’s simply a choice we all must make. We can pay in advance for health (at bargain rates), or we can pay and suffer in hopes that there is a medical option that will provide relief, later at a much higher price.
As inexpensive as a quality calcium/magnesium supplement is, Requip (ropinirole) may be cheaper yet, but it doesn’t provide the natural nutrients that your body needs, plus it may add side-effects (like falling asleep while driving, or in the middle of a conversation) that you don’t need.
