Of Mind, Matter, and Spirit: Why Health is so Important

We live in what some call “the information age”, and indeed it seems a fitting title for now. Never before have we had so much raw information available to us, thrust upon us, the valuable and the useless mingled together. A great and still growing segment of that avalanche of information is centered around health. In this I see purpose, for good health is the stair to spiritual and mental progression, while bad health is the invisible cage of repression.

“If there is any true temple, true gurdwara, true mosque or true church, it is our own body. This place {the Creator} has designed for {Itself}, and {It} sits within.” – Maharaja Charan Singh Ji, Sikh mystic and teacher

“What we feel and think and are is to a great extent determined by the state of our ductless glands and viscera.” – Aldous Huxley, writer and philosopher

“Destroy the roots of the healthiest plants, their heads will droop and die. Many excellent qualities of the mind have their roots, in fact, in the body: their summits, which adorn the spiritual being–the mind–will wither if we neglect the soil of these valuable plants.” – C.G. Salzmann, theologist and writer

Let’s pretend you are utterly selfish, greedy, and ruthless. Your goal is to exert as much control over the world as possible (which of course includes the people in it) and enrich yourself endlessly, by any means necessary. Wouldn’t it then make sense to work toward making the “lesser people” even less able to confound your designs by promoting dis-ease and products that damage health? How about selling things for people to eat that aren’t actually food and are laced with toxins? Things that will shorten their lifespan and land large groups of them in specialized clinics. Of course it would make sense. Especially if you can make handsome profits from doing so.

If you are scoffing, just keep in mind that we have a clinical term for this kind of person (sociopath), and they are quite real. We don’t even have to search that hard to find evidence of the harm caused by this kind of person (sadly, corporations ARE people too, from a legal standpoint), there are entire websites dedicated to exposing it. If we know that these products and practices cause harm, that they impede our development and dampen our potential, it’s reasonable to assume the makers must also know by now. That has serious implications.

“A person should aim to maintain physical health and vigor, in order that their soul may be upright, in a condition to know God. For it is impossible for one to understand sciences and meditate upon them when he is hungry or sick, or when any of his limbs is aching.” – Maimonides Law 3, Judaic scholar and physician

“To keep the body in good health is a duty…otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” – Siddhartha Gautama, founder of Buddhism

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and the spirit of God dwelleth in you?” – 1 Corinthians 3:16 (NKJV Christian Bible)

“Eat of what is lawful and wholesome on the earth.” – Quran 2:168 (Islamic holy book)

If life is pointless and we are just a meaningless collection of atoms, none of this matters. But if your belief system (be it personal or widely established) tells you otherwise, then your health matters very much. It is beyond any doubt that the health of the body and the health of the mind are interconnected; we must also recognize that the health of the mind/body affects the health of the spirit, or soul. If we are here for a purpose, be it to “serve God” or simply to be the best we can be and help others to do the same, we must understand that our purpose will be best served when we are healthy in mind, body, and spirit. Toward that end we should eat real fooddrink clean waterpractice mindfulness, and see to it that our body gets the sleep and exercise it needs to be a fitting temple for the spirit.
