5 Ways to Mitigate Stress When You Launch a New Business

Launching a new business is one of the most intimidating and stressful of activities you will ever encounter.  You’re not just dealing with the stress of running a business, but also with the stress of uncertainty.  It’s a constant struggle, wondering if you can make ends meet and trying to predict the uncertain future.  Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the stress you have to deal with.  Here are five ways to compose yourself, resist the urge to scream and finds some Zen-like peace within yourself.

1.Burn off stress and excess energy a few times a day.

According to every trusted medical source out there, including the Mayo Clinic, working out can decrease your stress levels and actually energize you thanks to the release of endorphins.  Sitting in an office for hours a day is torture and will only bump up your stress levels.  Instead, learn to run.  Or do some cardio outside or at a nearby gym.  You will start to notice your neck pains and headaches dissipating and experience an improvement in your mood and creativity.

2. Make sure your work area is relaxing.

A stressful or barren work desk is a disaster.  It will actually de-motivate you to show up for work and make you miserable, even when you are working.  Google is well known for having a “fun office environment” and have stated that they want their offices to be the happiest place on earth for their employees.  They have multiple play areas, free cafeterias and quirky interiors designed to boost the morale of their employees and keep them long-term.

3. Plan ahead.

The only way to equip yourself from bad news, crushing obstacles and hopeless downturn in the economy is to actually prepare for it!  Devise multiple strategies and alternative plans so that you can instantly refer to a protocol, rather than stress about having to invent one.  One source suggests that you can plan ahead and “recession proof” your business by creating emergency funds, keeping personal and business finances separate, purchasing business insurance, and diversifying investments.

4. Get a good night’s sleep every night and lay off the caffeine.

While many business owners love coffee in the morning, drinking too much in the way of energy drinks, soda pop, coffee or tea in the evening or afternoon will have you tossing and turning all night, amplifying the stress.  Studies have actually been done showing the long-lasting effects caffeine can have on a person’s stress level.  Make it a rule to do most of the hard work when you first get up, avoiding caffeine towards the end of the day.  You will sleep better and the stress will be less severe.

  1. Outsource as much as humanly possible.

No business has ever made it working under the efforts of just one man.  Whether you idolize Howard Hughes, Richard Branson or Steve Jobs, know that they had plenty of help along the way.  They outsourced assignments, they hired employees, and they took on supervisory roles as the business grew.  You don’t even have to hire full time employees if you can’t afford it.  You can hire part time virtual assistants.  For paperwork and incorporating, you can even use a service like Inc for Free which allows you to start a corporation and do other legal work with the help of legal professionals, but without the hefty cost.  Less worry, more time to focus on the essentials.

Make plans immediately to de-stress because your life is just as important as your business!
